Nauctis: The Sunken Realm

Worldwide release:

Magic is diving into a new world. Nauctis is an underwater plane with cities beneath the waves and an ocean that grows increasingly dangerous the deeper you go. For those who love to discover an unknown part of the multiverse, this is the set to follow.

In the announcement, we encounter merfolk and homarids: the crab-like inhabitants that older players may recognize. The story begins with tensions between two kingdoms. How this will translate into cards and playstyles will become clear in future reveals.

Kamigawa: Titanbreach

Worldwide release:

Kamigawa returns, but gets an unwelcome visitor: monsters from Ikoria. Through an Omenpath above Towashi, a part of that world lands on Kamigawa. The defense includes massive mechs.

This is the set I am personally most curious about. The combination of Kamigawa’s neon cities and Ikoria’s giant creatures appeals to me. Which cards will fit well into your Commander decks will become clear during the previews.

Zhalfir

Worldwide release:

Zhalfir is getting its own set. This world already has a long history within Magic and is now central as an independent plane. Wizards emphasizes Afro-fantasy, Zhalfir's unique visual identity, and the return of Teferi Akosa.

For players who know Teferi and the older stories, it is a recognizable starting point. New players can discover the world through this set. Details about cards, mechanics, and products will be part of future previews; the name and release date are already known.

Universes Beyond in 2027: confirmation and rumors

Universes Beyond brings worlds from other franchises into Magic. In the official timeline, three releases are reserved for this: April 9, August 6 and November 19, 2027. These are announced dates; the corresponding names have not yet been filled in the consulted sources.

SpellArmory Tip: distinguish between an announced release date and a confirmed franchise. An empty slot in the calendar is not evidence for a specific crossover.

What about Warhammer, Mistborn and the other names?

Warhammer 40,000, Game of Thrones, Mistborn/Cosmere, a new Marvel set, The Legend of Zelda, World of Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls are interesting ideas for crossovers. In this overview, we treat them as unconfirmed speculation, without probability scores or links to any of the three release dates.

An anniversary, an existing collaboration, or a world that seems to fit well with Magic is, in itself, insufficient to announce a set. News about another game, like Dungeons & Dragons, does not confirm a Magic release.

My starting point for this calendar: a name only gets a spot once Wizards or the involved partner officially links that collaboration to Magic and 2027. Until then, you can dream about it, but do not base any purchase plans on it.

MagicCons and the Limited Championship in 2027

In addition to the set releases, four MagicCons have been announced, including the first edition in Japan. The Magic Limited Championship in Minneapolis is a separate event.

For players from the Netherlands and Belgium, Amsterdam is a logical date to keep in mind. Check the current ticket information and the program on the official MagicCon website before planning your visit.

What does the calendar mean for you?

Standard rotation shifts to the beginning of the year

Wizards has announced that from 2027, the annual Standard rotation will coincide with the first set of the calendar year. Therefore, there is no rotation in 2026. For 2027, Nauctis is the relevant set moment to consider when working on your Standard deck.

Also, keep an eye on the prerelease timing: a worldwide release date in this calendar is not automatically the exact date on which your deck legality changes. Verify that before an event via the official Standard information. The change is explained in Wizards' explanation on Standard rotation starting in 2027.

Choose based on your playstyle and budget

Six major sets mean there is a lot to follow. You don't have to keep up with every release. As a Commander player, you can see which cards add something to your decks; as a collector, you can choose the world or presentation that appeals to you.

Do you want to draft, collect, or buy a ready-made deck? These are different goals. In our explanation of the different MTG boosters, you can read which boosters are intended for what purpose. If you are new, start with Start with Magic.

A set date says nothing about pre-orders

The announcement of a set does not tell you when every product can be ordered, what it costs, or what quantities will be available. For the current offering, check the SpellArmory set pages and read the information on the specific product page for a pre-order.
