In brief

The 2026 MTG release calendar features seven major sets: three in Magic’s own Multiverse and four Universes Beyond crossovers.

  • Five sets have been released worldwide.
  • Reality Fracture launches on October 2. The prerelease began on September 25.
  • Star Trek follows on November 13. The prerelease week runs from November 6 to November 12.

When is the next Magic set being released? And why do you sometimes see packs before the official release date? Below you will find the major releases of 2026, with a brief explanation for each set and the difference between prerelease, worldwide release, and delivery.

This overview covers physical Magic cards. Standalone Secret Lair drops, reprint waves, accessories, and digital releases have their own schedules and are excluded from this calendar.

Magic Multiverse means that a set takes place in Magic’s own worlds. Universes Beyond brings worlds and characters from other franchises into Magic.

Which Magic sets are still coming in 2026?

Last major set of 2026

Star Trek

This Universes Beyond set brings crews, starships, and adversaries from sixty years of Star Trek to Magic.

Prerelease from November 6 to November 12. The worldwide release follows on November 13. Check with your local game store for the date of their local event.

See the official dates at WPN.

Which sets have already been released?

The first five major releases of 2026 are behind us. This is the theme of each set, so you can quickly see which world appeals to you.

Lorwyn Eclipsed — January 23

A return to Lorwyn and Shadowmoor: two sides of a world where light and darkness play a major role. A set from Magic’s own history, featuring elves, goblins, and other familiar inhabitants.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — March 6

Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo make their appearance in Magic. This Universes Beyond release centers on the Turtles and their world, with cards and products based on the recognizable characters.

Secrets of Strixhaven — April 24

Back to Strixhaven University and the five colleges. Magical studies, spells, and the Mystical Archive give this Magic Multiverse set its own character.

Marvel Super Heroes — June 26

A Universes Beyond set featuring Marvel heroes and villains, including Iron Man, Black Panther, and Doctor Doom. The date above is the worldwide release date; the availability of a specific product may vary.

See Marvel Super Heroes at SpellArmory.

The Hobbit — August 14

Bilbo’s adventure brings Magic once again to Middle-earth. This Universes Beyond set centers on the journey from The Hobbit, featuring dwarves, treasures, and Smaug.

Prerelease, release, and delivery: what is the difference?

You may encounter different dates for a single set. They describe different moments:

  1. Prerelease: the first organized introduction to the new set at participating stores. You can play with the new cards before the worldwide release. The store determines its own event timing within the official period.
  2. Worldwide release: the general introduction date of the physical set. This is the date we use in the calendar.
  3. Delivery of your order: dependent on the ordered product, stock, distribution, and shipping. An official release date is not a delivery guarantee in itself.

Participating WPN stores may sell products earlier under prerelease conditions. Therefore, packs you see before the worldwide release were not necessarily sold too early. Furthermore, a digital release on MTG Arena may have a different date.

SpellArmory Tip

Are you ordering something for a draft night, birthday, or gift? Check the delivery information for the specific product. For pre-orders, also read SpellArmory's current pre-order policy to know which terms apply to your order.

Do you need to keep up with every new set?

My advice: choose based on what you want to play or collect. A calendar helps you plan, but it is not a shopping list. A beloved world, a deck that appeals to you, or a fun draft night is a better reason for a purchase than the feeling that you must not miss anything.

Do you mainly want to draft with a new set? Then Play Boosters are the logical starting point. If you are looking for special editions for your collection, check what each product actually contains. In the guide to MTG booster types, you can read which booster fits which goal.

I write more extensively about the pace and costs in Has Magic: The Gathering become too expensive? and in my article on scalping in MTG.

What does the schedule for 2027 look like?

Wizards has announced six major sets for 2027: three Magic Multiverse sets and three Universes Beyond sets, which will alternate. That is one major set fewer than in 2026. This is the announced distribution for 2027; it is not a guarantee for any future year.

The details can be found in the official announcement from Wizards for 2027.

Sources and currency

Release dates and prerelease information were verified with Wizards of the Coast and the Wizards Play Network on September 28, 2026. The calendar shows the seven major main sets, not every individual Magic product. Announced dates are subject to change.
