Every cave under Ixalan hides something. Hakbal has brought enough Merfolk to explore them all at once. The Explorers of the Deep Commander Deck builds up a growing school of Merfolk and lets each of them explore turn after turn.
Hakbal of the Surging Soul triggers at the beginning of combat for every Merfolk you control. Each of them explores individually: reveal the top card of your library; a land goes into your hand, while a nonland card gives your Merfolk a +1/+1 counter and can then remain on top of your library or be put into your graveyard. With five Merfolk on the table, you get five separate explore moments before you even attack.

Why choose Explorers of the Deep?
- Your entire Merfolk board explores: At the beginning of each combat during your turn, Hakbal lets every Merfolk you control explore individually.
- Explore does two useful things: Lands enter your hand; for nonlands, the exploring creature gets a +1/+1 counter and you may decide whether the revealed card stays on top.
- Hakbal keeps providing mana and cards: When he attacks, you may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield. If you don't, you draw a card.
- +1/+1 counter synergy: Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Evolution Sage, Vorel, and Merfolk Skydiver make every explore result even more interesting.
- Merfolk typal out of the box: Master of the Pearl Trident, Merfolk Sovereign, Merrow Reejerey, Kumena, Svyelun, and Emperor Mihail II are all included.
- Make counters nearly unblockable: Herald of Secret Streams prevents creatures with +1/+1 counters from being blocked — exactly what a deck where everyone explores wants to see.
Explore deeper every turn
Hakbal of the Surging Soul
Face Commander · Green / Blue · Merfolk Scout
At the beginning of combat during your turn, each Merfolk you control explores. Furthermore, when Hakbal attacks, you may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield. If you choose not to, you draw a card.
Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood
Featured Commander · Green / Blue · Salamander Serpent
When Xolatoyac enters or attacks, put a flood counter on a land and that land becomes an Island in addition to its other types. During your end step, you untap each permanent you control with a counter on it. That works not only with flood counters, but also with the +1/+1 counters that appear all over the deck.
What does Explore do?
When a creature explores, reveal the top card of your library. If it's a land, that card goes into your hand. If it's not a land, the creature gets a +1/+1 counter and you then choose whether the revealed card stays on top of your library or goes to your graveyard.
Playstyle:
Explorers of the Deep grows gradually but steadily. More Merfolk means more explore triggers; more explores mean more counters and better draws; and those counters make your Merfolk increasingly difficult to stop.
