Playing Magic near Maastricht? There's more than you think: a cozy board game café with weekly MTG nights in the city center, an active WhatsApp community to find home games, and stores with events throughout Limburg — plus just across the border in Aachen and Hasselt. Here's everything you need to know.
Magic is at its best at a real table, with real people. But if you're just starting out (or have just moved), the big question is: where do you find those people? I was born and raised in Maastricht and have seen the local scene become increasingly vibrant in recent years. In this guide, I list all the places in and around Maastricht where you can go — from draft nights to Commander pods, from board game cafés to living rooms.
Dr. & Dr. Samosa — Maastricht's board game café
In the heart of Maastricht, on the Grote Gracht, you'll find Dr. & Dr. Samosa — a board game café as a board game café should be: cozy, accessible, and with incredibly kind owners who are happy to help you if you don't know a game. I've been there multiple times and it always feels like coming home. The main language spoken is English — the audience is a nice mix of locals, students, and expats — so even if you don't speak Dutch, you can easily join in.
For Magic players, Friday night is sacred: every Friday there's MTG night (6:30 PM – 10:00 PM), in collaboration with board game club BGC Maas. The formats rotate — one week draft or cube, the next week Commander — so there's something for every type of player. Participation costs a few euros and registration is recommended. They also organize pre-release events for new sets and cube drafts.
And then there's something special: Liliana's Lounge, a Magic event exclusively for women. Do you want to learn to play? You don't need to bring a deck — everything is ready. Do you already play? Bring your own deck and join for EDH or other formats. A wonderful initiative that lowers the threshold for a group that is still underrepresented in the hobby.
💡 Omèr's tip: Bring your trade binder to Friday night! There's plenty of trading, and nothing is more fun than cycling home with a new card. Besides Magic, you can also go there for board game nights (Monday and Thursday) and even a chess night on Tuesday.
Finding a pod: the MTG WhatsApp community
Sometimes you just want to play a casual game of Commander at home — but then you need three other players. For that, there's an active MTG game finder WhatsApp group in Maastricht with about fifty members. The idea is simple and works surprisingly well:
- Someone posts a date, time, location (or "looking for host") and the desired power level — for example, casual bracket 2-3.
- Want to join? You copy the message and put your name in an open spot.
- Pod full? Time to play. The rest is arranged among yourselves.
The focus is on home games and Spelltable games (online Commander via webcam) in and around Maastricht. Want to join? Send me a message, and I'll send you an invitation.
Additionally, there's the Facebook group "Magic the Gathering Maastricht" where local players find each other.
Stores in Maastricht
De Windroos (Minckelersstraat) — a household name in Maastricht for years. A large assortment of board games, and for tabletop fans, especially a lot of Warhammer, including a playing table. The TCG offer is a bit smaller, but for board games and miniatures, this is your address.
Weebs R Us (Spilstraat) — anime and manga store in the city center with a TCG corner. Nice to drop by if you're in town.
SpellArmory — and then, of course, there's my own store. 😉 For now, a small home-based store where you can visit by appointment, with an ever-growing assortment entirely focused on Magic: sealed product, Commander decks, sleeves, and accessories. I always try to guarantee the lowest price — if you see a product cheaper at another Dutch webshop? Feel free to request a price match, and I'll see what I can do. Eventually, I dream of a real physical game store in Maastricht — but more on that later.
In the rest of Limburg
Magus Games (Elsloo) — the steady value for organized play in South Limburg, fifteen minutes from Maastricht. Weekly Friday Night Magic and regular drafts. If you want to play more competitively or just need a regular game night, this is your anchor.
Menijacards (Heerlen) — TCG store on Saroleastraat, with Magic, Pokémon, and other card games.
Roermond — at Het Hobbelpaardje and THE EXPERIENCE you can find games and TCG products in Central Limburg.
Just across the border
The beauty of Maastricht: within half an hour you're in two other countries — and they play Magic there too.
White Rabbit — Community Game Store (Aachen, DE) — on Wirichsbongardstraße, less than 40 minutes from Maastricht. A true community game store with a large TCG offering (Magic, Flesh and Blood, Pokémon and more) and organized game nights, from Commander Parties to Store Championships. Also board games, but TCG is the main focus here.
Hasselt (BE) — the Belgian side has two great addresses: Cardgameshop on Demerstraat (specializing in collectible cards, including Magic, plus grading services) and board game specialist store Oberonn, the meeting place for game enthusiasts in Hasselt with regular TCG events.
Genk (BE) — MagicVortex is a friendly local game store specializing in TCGs, with game nights running until midnight. The name says it all: Magic is central here.
First time at a game night? Here's how to approach it
- Just go. The barrier feels higher than it is — MTG players are usually quick to welcome new faces and explain things.
- A precon is perfectly fine. For your first Commander night, you don't need a souped-up deck. A pre-constructed Commander deck is exactly what such evenings are for.
- Sleeves on. Your cards are in for a long night of shuffling. Good sleeves are not a luxury.
- Bring your trade binder. You never know what trade awaits you.
