One body in. An entire army out. The Wretched Ranks Foundations Commander Deck introduces you to one of Magic's most iconic strategies: creating Zombies, sacrificing creatures, and ultimately overwhelming your opponents with an ever-growing undead army.
Ghoulcaller Gisa makes the plan delightfully clear. Sacrifice one of your creatures and Gisa turns its power into a group of 2/2 Zombie tokens. This way, one strong creature can suddenly transform into several new threats — exactly the kind of dark value that mono-black is known for.
Ideal as a first Commander deck:
Mono-Black · Zombies · Sacrifice · Tokens
Why choose Wretched Ranks?
- Beginner friendly: The plan is clear: build up Zombies and use your creatures as resources to create even more value.
- Create a Zombie horde: Ghoulcaller Gisa can turn one creature into multiple 2/2 Zombie tokens.
- Creatures are meant to die: In this deck, losing a creature doesn't have to be a disadvantage — it can actually be part of your strategy.
- Overwhelm with numbers: Once your Zombie army becomes large enough, it gets increasingly difficult for opponents to stop every attacker.
- Mono-Black: One color keeps the mana simple while you learn to handle sacrifice, tokens, and graveyard-focused gameplay.
- Ready to play out of the box: The complete 100-card Commander list is already in the box.
Build your undead army
Ghoulcaller Gisa
Commander · Mono-Black · Human Wizard
Gisa can sacrifice another creature to create X tapped 2/2 Zombie tokens, where X is equal to the sacrificed creature's power. A creature with high power can thus grow into a complete horde in one go.
More bodies, more pressure
You don't always have to be careful with every creature. Sometimes a large creature is more valuable as multiple Zombies. Calmly build up mass and eventually let the numbers do the work.
Great for beginners:
Wretched Ranks suits players who enjoy having many creatures on the board and don't mind sacrificing their own cards if it means getting even more Zombies in return.
